Plenary: Investigating the New Autocrats

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule, view media, leave feedback and see who's attending!

Journalism in general, and investigative journalism in particuar, is fighting back against a global backlash of autocrats, oligarchs, and unaccountable power. Even in countries where we thought we were secure -- in Europe, the United States -- the media finds it is under assault in ways not seen for generations. What is at risk is extraordinary: the future of democracy, rule of law, transparency and human rights, to name a few.

We have asked prominent journalists from six front-line countries in this battle to talk about how they are dealing with the new environment -- India, the Philippines, Russia, South Africa, the U.S., and Venezuela. What strategies are they using to keep fighting the good fight, where are they being successful, and where do they most need help? Despite the weighty challenges we face, we think you will find much to be inspired by here.
