Measuring Story Impact

As philanthropic support of journalism increases, the need to show "impact" of investigative stories has never been greater. Donors and other investors want to know what their "return on investment" will be. Yet measuring the impact of investigative reports is notoriously challenging. Even great reporting may have little or no impact, or won't show it for months or years. And the very act of questioning those in power can have a deterrent effect that is nearly impossible to measure.

How then to provide accurate gauges of what we do? Our speakers will present two new reports -- one by GIJN, another by the Bureau for Investigative Reporting -- with some needed insights. We will have two other journalists -- from the Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism and Columbia University's Journalism Grad School -- who will offer their own perspectives about what's important in measuring impact and how best to approach it.
