The statistics are grim: over 1250 journalists killed since 1992, thousands more assaulted and persecuted; 260 in prison and hundreds more threatened by onerous and misused libel and security laws; and nearly 500 exiled from their home countries since 2008.

And yet we persevere. Indeed, journalists are digging deeper and asking tougher questions, in more places and with better tools, than ever before. Here are five compelling case studies -- from Iraq, Azerbaijan, Ethiopia, Myanmar and Russia -- of investigative journalists who are fighting the good fight for accountability, transparency, and an independent, professional news media.
