The world of Joy Summers is a world of stories and investigations. She has exposed high profile executives in the private and public sectors. She has stayed on the trail of the corrupt, and uncovered malfeasance in meticulous detail. She has waded through thousands of pages of documents and court papers and brought exciting television to viewers.
Her stories, which reveal, sometimes shock, often inspire, have won numerous awards. She is able to move across various disciplines with ease. She has taken home CNN African journalist awards twice, and a Sanlam financial journalist award three times. She has won the country’s prestigious Webber Wentzel legal journalist award, as well as several SAB environmental awards. In 2009, she won the overall Vodacom journalist of the year, award and two South African television and film awards in the
short documentary category.
Her approach to stories is detailed and exacting. She is skilled at writing tight and punchy scripts for television, and her structures ensure a smooth and well told narrative. Apart from her ability to investigate and research, she has a wide technical knowledge of the film-making process and demands the highest standards from her editors, her camera, and her audio crew.
Joy has a Diploma in Film and Video technology, and began her career as an editor and producer on educational series and documentaries for Penguin Films.
Late in 1995, Joy joined the award-winning team of investigative journalists at Carte Blanche, one of South Africa’s longest running actuality shows on MNET, on the DSTV platform. Two years later she was promoted to managing editor. She also worked as the Africa editor and spent many Sunday’s directing the live to tape broadcasts for the show.
After 11 years in management, she chose to go back to the field, where she has spent the last ten years, honing her craft as an investigative producer.
