Using Document Cloud
Harness the power of DocumentCloud: Learn how to use this cloud-based service to organize and mine documents for a story. Extensive analysis tools enable you to upload a batch of documents and then produce a timeline with key dates, as well as an interactive list of key people and institutions mentioned in the documents.

Uncover patterns and connections that you might have missed with paper documents alone. Highlight key passages in documents, write short explainer notes and embed the documents online as part of your investigation. The service allows you to keep your documents private and share publicly only those that you decide to publish.

In addition, you can search DocumentCloud for all sorts of materials that other journalists have made public, including court filings, hearing transcripts, testimony, legislation, reports, memos, meeting minutes and correspondence. Major investigations, including the Panama Papers, have used DocumentCloud. The open-source service also fosters easy collaboration among teams -- both inside one organization as well as among several partners.

Brainstorming Session: Managing Knowledge Systems and Databases
Having big data is not enough anymore. It's how you use it. It's about how do your databases work together and what you can do with them. Investigative organizations are doing interesting new things and working together to find ways to get their databases to talk to each other; to model patterns of crime or corruption and match those patterns to your data; to design machine learning platforms that identify individuals and assign records to them; and to build out global topographies of money and power that can instantly map complex networks by different variables. Join this discussion and figure out how to get involved.

How to Mine Data for Storytelling
How to mine data for storytelling: Conducting data interviews using data visualisation

We can use data for storytelling when we understand how to interrogate the information contained within a dataset. Technology has made data a tangible artefact, which can be worked with in different ways, shaped in different forms, and seen from different perspectives. This session exposes participants to using data visualisation as a platform for mining data for stories. This will include the data interview (intertwined with the fundamentals of storytelling), a demonstration of using data visualisation for mining, exploration and analysis, and also a look at some of the online resources and existing tools that can be used to explore data in this form.

Note: Data Labs have 38 seats with computers. These workshops may reach capacity quickly, so we recommend you arrive early.

Collaborating on Data-Driven Stories

Investigative reporting is a team sport. Here's how to work together on projects using simple collaborative tools. Not every project needs to be top-secret and ultra-protected. Our veteran trainers will explain how to share sources, documents, data, story ideas, discussions and drafts in collaborative and cross-border projects.

The session will present different ways of approaching internal and external collaborations and identify some of the forms collaborations can take. It will also discuss some of the benefits and challenges one can expect to encounter during a joint project and offer some ideas about how to surmount them.

Note: Data Labs have 38 seats with computers. These workshops may reach capacity quickly, so we recommend you arrive early.

Digital Gadgets for Tracking and Monitoring

Marcus Lindemann and his team have worked with hidden cameras in various settings since the year 2000, and from there they started playing with other gadgets. While their first GPS tracking project on bike theft failed completely (the bike was gone with all the gadgets and only a video of the theft was kept), they later used GPS tracking for a consumer story on parcel services to show why some parcels were not delivered.

To monitor price changes at petrol stations, his team bought and installed time lapse camera, but before the workflow had been established, monitoring fuel prices became much easier. However, once those cameras were there, they came in handy with another story...

Currently they are working on a long-term project using newer and cheaper GPS tools. Marcus will present the tools and video footage in this session.
