Tom Burgis is the investigations correspondent for the Financial Times, based in London. Previously, he was the newspaper's correspondent in southern Africa, based in Johannesburg, and in west Africa, based in Lagos. His first book, The Looting Machine: Warlords,

Tycoons, Smugglers and the Systematic Theft of Africa's Wealth was published in 2015 and won an Overseas Press Club of America award. The New York Times called it a "brave defiant book". Tom's journalism and his work with fellow reporters has won and been shortlisted for two British Press Awards, two European Press Prizes, a One World Media award, a Society of Publishers in Asia investigative reporting award, a Sigma Delta Chi award and a SABEW award.He has exposed corruption in international oil and mining deals, revealed the secretive network at the heart of China’s advance into Africa, followed the “dark money” that courses through the City of London and written a comprehensive account of the murder of the MP Jo Cox by a British neo-Nazi.
