Currently the managing editor of the Global Investigative Journalism Network, Tanya has been a journalist for more than 20 years, living and working as a writer and editor in Los Angeles, Prague, San Francisco and Johannesburg. At GIJN, she oversees a team of regional editors in nine countries, producing daily content on investigative journalism and media innovation and sustainability. Most recently, Tanya was a non-fiction editor for Pan Macmillan South Africa, a contributing writer to US News & World Report and taught creative non-fiction and digital storytelling in the journalism department of the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg. She is a founding partner of the Media Hack Collective, a journalism collaboration dedicated to the craft of digital storytelling. Tanya served as the executive editor of the Mail & Guardian, and is the former managing editor of Maverick magazine (now Daily Maverick) and was head of strategic partnerships and audience development for The Conversation Africa during the start-up phase of the global group’s expansion into Africa. From 2013-2016, she was the editorial director of Duke University’s annual journalism conference in Johannesburg, the Menell Media Exchange. Tanya holds an MFA in writing from the University of San Francisco.
